Back in 1955, a group of New York Air Brake employees founded Northern Federal Credit Union in Watertown, New York. Their goal was to create a safe, secure place where employees could grow their savings and obtain loans at reasonable rates; something the existing financial institutions in town weren't providing. Over time, the credit union grew, expanding its services and welcoming many more members. 

In 1982, the name was changed to NYAB/TriCounty Federal Credit Union and membership was expanded to include employees and administrators of the 25 school districts, which comprised the North Country Coordinating Council of Teachers. To reflect its growth, the credit union changed its name to Northern Federal Credit Union in 1996.

Today, we are popularly known as Northern Credit Union serving more than 29,000 members through multiple branch locations across the North Country and a comprehensive online and mobile banking program. Members also have access to its nationwide network of more than 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs. Presently, the credit union serves more than 185 businesses, organizations, medical facilities, school districts and municipalities all over the North Country.

Throughout its history, Northern has helped its members by providing the financial services, resources and education they need to achieve their financial goals. From its beginning and far into its future, this has been and will remain Northern Credit Union's commitment.
